What this policy covers

This policy explains what personal data we collect through this website, why, how we use and protect it, and your rights. It covers people who join our waitlist, use our free Creator Tax Check, or otherwise contact us through the site. It does not cover the separate terms that apply once you become a client — those are set out in your engagement letter.

The personal data we collect

We only collect what we need. Depending on how you use the site, that may include:

The free Creator Tax Check. The Creator Tax Check runs in your browser. The answers you give to its questions stay on your device and are not sent to us as individual answers. If you choose to submit the tool to join our waitlist, we receive your contact details (such as your first name and email address), four high-level result statuses (a general summary such as whether each area looks fine or worth checking), and the version of the tool you used. We do not receive every underlying answer you gave.

The waitlist. Your first name and email address, and optionally anything you choose to tell us about what you create and where you are in your journey.

When you contact us. If you email us, we receive your name, email address and whatever you include in your message.

Automatically, when you visit. Limited technical information such as your device and browser type, and basic first-party statistics about how the site is used. See our Cookie Notice for detail.

We do not ask for, and you should not send us, financial account details or sensitive personal information through the website. Client identity and anti-money-laundering checks happen separately and securely after you become a client, not through this site.

Why we use your data, and our legal basis

To manage the waitlist and tell you when we open — on the basis of your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

To send you helpful updates, guidance and launch news — on the basis of your consent, which you can withdraw using the unsubscribe link in any email.

To respond to your enquiry — on the basis of our legitimate interest in answering people who contact us, and in taking steps at your request before any possible engagement.

To run, secure and improve our website — on the basis of our legitimate interests in operating the site properly and keeping it secure.

To comply with our legal and regulatory obligations — where the law requires it.

How long we keep it

We keep waitlist and marketing data until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you, or until 24 months after your last engagement with us, whichever is sooner — after which we delete it. If you email an enquiry and do not become a client, we keep that correspondence for up to 12 months and then delete it.

If you go on to become a client, separate and longer retention rules apply to your client records under anti-money-laundering and tax law (generally at least five to six years). Those rules are explained in your engagement letter and are not governed by this website policy.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your data. We share it only with the service providers who help us run the site and our communications, and only so far as they need it:

MailerLite — our email and waitlist platform. When you join the waitlist, your details go directly to MailerLite, which stores them and sends you the emails you've consented to. MailerLite also tells us whether our emails are opened and whether links in them are clicked, so we can understand what's useful and improve what we send.

Squarespace — our website host. Squarespace hosts and serves the website and provides us with basic, aggregated visitor statistics.

Google reCAPTCHA — used on our forms to protect against spam and abuse. This service is provided by Google and may collect device and usage information to tell humans and bots apart. Your use of reCAPTCHA is subject to Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Each provider acts under a contract requiring them to protect your data. Some may process data outside the UK; where they do, appropriate safeguards (such as UK-approved data transfer terms or an adequacy decision) are in place.

We may also disclose data where we are legally required to, for example to comply with a court order or a regulator.

Where your data is held

Some of our providers store or process data outside the UK. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards recognised under UK data protection law, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, or an adequacy decision.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to: be informed about how we use your data; access the data we hold about you; have inaccurate data corrected; have your data erased; restrict or object to our processing; and data portability. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@creatorbooks.co.uk. We'll respond within the time the law requires (usually one month).

You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK regulator, at https://ico.org.uk — though we'd appreciate the chance to put things right first.

Keeping your data secure

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data against loss, misuse and unauthorised access. No website can be guaranteed completely secure, but we use reputable providers and limit access to your data to those who need it.

Children

This website and our services are aimed at people running creator businesses and are not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18 through this site.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date at the top shows when it last changed. If we make significant changes, we'll take reasonable steps to let affected people know.
